Same-sex marriage is legal nationwide in fourteen countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, Denmark, Brazil, France and Uruguay. It has been signed into law in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, but will not come into effect until later in the year, and 2014 for the UK.

The District of Columbia, five Native American tribes, and thirteen American states perform same-sex marriages, those states being Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Maine, Maryland, Washington, California, Delaware, Rhode Island and Minnesota. Mexico City and Quintana Roo also performs same-sex marriages, and their marriage certificates are recognized in all 31 Mexican states. Same sex marriage is recognised, but not performed, in Israel and some other jurisdictions in the United States and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry has been and remains the topic of debate worldwide. Several regions and countries have passed statutory and constitutional amendments that explicitly prohibit the legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
