In a Dark Place
It happened long enough ago that I can't be blamed for forgetting some of the specifics. I tried, but I don't remember all the particulars particularly well. What I do remember is that it felt like it had been happening for many years now. I couldn't tell for certain until the very end.
It happened on a Sunday on a subway platform. That makes things easier. If you live in a city, or have ever been to a city, it has probably happened to you too.
You're on the subway, heading home. For reasons outside your control, it's late. But it's a weeknight and long past rush hour, so you're allowed to expect reasonable waits and reasonable amounts of people. Everything's going to be okay. Five minutes pass and the train pulls into the station. You let yourself inside and you let yourself relax as the doors seal themselves shut.
