God made man perfectly holy and happy; and the beautiful earth did not, when leaving the hand of the Creator, stain of decay, nor shadow of curse. The transgression of the law of God, of the law of love, is what has brought pain and death. However, in the midst of the suffering that results from sin the love of God is manifested.

It is written that God cursed the earth because of man. (Genesis 3:17) The thistles and thorns - the difficulties and trials that make his life a life of zeal and care - were assigned to him for his good, as part of the necessary preparation, according to God's plan, for his elevation of the ruin and degradation that sin had caused.

The world, although fallen, is not all sadness and misery. In nature itself there are messages of hope and comfort. There are flowers in thistles and the thorns are covered with roses.

"God is love," is written on each flower bud that opens, on each stem of the nascent grass. The beautiful birds that fill the air with melodies with their beautiful songs, the exquisitely nuanced flowers that in their perfection perfume the air, the tall trees of the forest with its rich foliage of living greenery, all bear witness to the tender and paternal care of our God and his desire to make his children happy.

The Word of God reveals his character. He has declared his infinite love and mercy. When Moses said: "Pray let me see your glory," Jehovah replied: "I will make all my kindness pass before your sight." (Exodus 33: 18, 19) Such is his glory. Jehovah passed before Moses and cried out:

"Jehovah, Jehovah, God compassionate and graciously slow in anger and great in mercy and Faithfulness; who uses mercy until the thousandth generation; who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin."
