Dolphins are a widely distributed and diverse group of aquatic mammals. They are an informal grouping within the order Cetacea, excluding whales and porpoises, so to zoologists the grouping is paraphyletic. The dolphins comprise the extant families Delphinidae (the oceanic dolphins), Platanistidae (the Indian river dolphins), Iniidae (the new world river dolphins), and Pontoporiidae (the brackish dolphins), and the extinct Lipotidae (baiji or Chinese river dolphin).

Dolphins are unlike any other creature. These intelligent marine mammals live in social groups (called pods) with relatives and friends, where they communicate with other pod members through sounds such as whistles and clicks. Dolphin whistles are used for communication, while clicks are used for echolocation - helping the dolphin navigate the ocean. Some dolphin species, such as bottlenose dolphins, even have unique whistles that help other dolphins identify them - just like humans have names!
