Example Short Story by Kachina, from New Zealand

“Alright, take this. Swallow it. Don’t act different. You know what to do on the other side, someone will meet you.” Those were his only instructions. What am I doing? I can’t go through with this. I set the tiny bag aside and clutch the outside of my little basin, starring in the mirror at my reflection. So many indented lines, I can’t even remember when they weren’t there. My dark skin is radiating with fear and desperation. No. You have to do this. They promised. I have to see him again. I flicked my long dark hair behind my shoulders and tied it back into a pony tail. The tip of it brushes my elbows. I carefully put on my white pearl earrings and straighten out my uniform. With a glass of water in one hand, and the tiny bag of white powder in the other, I think of Razak and nothing else.

“Attention ladies and Gentlemen. This is the final boarding call for flight number 2041 – Brisbane Australia!” For 9 years I have worked here. Clearing tables for upper-class business men. Cleaning toilets for ladies with heels like runways and faces so beautiful but so cold. For 9 years I have had rubbish and trays tossed at me. I didn’t mind; I was grateful to find work so far away from home. But this is the only way I can see my son again. They promised me that when I crossed the border, they would deliver.

With my small bag of belongings, I make my way to the food court. Only today, I wasn't putting on fresh rubber gloves and emptying the rubbish bags, I keep walking until I reach check in. I wait in all sorts of ques, surrounded in all different types of people. For a split second, I lock eyes with a small boy. He is tightly gripping onto his mother's hand and pulling her onwards. It is still early hours, so the boy is wearing his train pyjamas and his blue backpack with yellow cars on it. His mother keeps shooting him fierce looks and is telling him too hold on. Her blue eyes are darting all over the place, embarrassed that she is causing a scene. However everyone is caught up in their own world, rushing to board their own flight and collect their luggage. I place my bag in a blue tray and continue walking. When I walk through a metal detector, I hold my breath and gnaw at the insides of my checks. Nothing happens and I collect my bag again. At exactly 8:15am, I board the plane and I am assisted to my seat, which is near the back. Fortunately, I am near the window and no one else claims the seats next to me. During take off a small sharp tingling feeling begins to occur in my stomach. It’s uncomfortable but bearable. I put down the tray on the seat in front of me and support my head in my hands. Panic boils inside me. I can't do this! I still have to make it through customs when I reach my destination. Then the small boy from the airport pops into my mind and I am reminded why I have to succeed. This is the only way I am to be with him again. They said that they would get him here and we would be together. Minutes passed like hours and the hours seemed to take eternity...
