A cryptogram is a famous quote hidden behind a simple code. Every letter of the alphabet has been swapped for a different one — and the same swap is used all the way through. A might stand for T everywhere, B for J everywhere. Your job is to work out the swaps and bring the sentence back.
HOW IT WORKS
Tap a box, pick a letter. Because the code is the same everywhere, filling in one box fills in every box with that code letter at once. Get a few right and words start to appear on their own.
WHERE TO START, IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE ONE
• A one-letter word is almost always A or I.
• A three-letter word at the start of a sentence is often THE.
• The most common letters in English are E, T, A and O.
• Apostrophes help: 'S, 'T and 'RE are common endings.
That is genuinely most of it. The app walks you through a short example before your first puzzle, and you can reopen the rules any time.
NOTHING IS RUSHING YOU
There is no timer, no lives, and no limit on wrong guesses. Change a letter as often as you like. Stuck? Reveal a letter, or check the ones you have filled in — hints are free and always have been. Nothing in this game is locked behind an ad.
EVERY QUOTE IS CHECKED
Quote apps have a habit of putting words in the wrong mouth. Every quote here was matched against the original book it came from before it shipped, and the author, the work and the year are shown the moment you solve it. The full list of source editions is in the app. If you ever think an attribution is wrong, there is a button to tell us.
All quotes are in the public domain — Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Confucius, Emerson, Twain, Wilde, Bierce and others, plus proverbs from around the world.
600 PUZZLES, SIX COLLECTIONS
Wisdom, Stoic, Literature, Wit & Humour, Motivation and Proverbs — each sorted from gentle to demanding. There is also one Daily Puzzle: the same quote for everyone, everywhere, with a streak if you keep coming back.
PLAYS ANYWHERE
The whole library is inside the app, so puzzles are built on your phone. It works on a plane, on the subway, and with no signal at all. No account, no sign-in. Leave a puzzle half finished and it will be waiting.
Larger text and a dark paper theme are in Settings.
A quiet puzzle for a coffee break.
